In the production of cloth the wool is first ‘carded or combed’ to make sure all the fibers are untangled and aligned in one direction before it is spun on a spinning wheel. There are various different designs of wheels to be found all across Scotland. This is a field recording of Minnie Lamont ‘on the peedie wheel’ made in Shetland on 29th October 1969 . It has a lovely rhythmic sound which would of commonly been heard in most Orkney and Shetland homes. I’m certain folk would of been dancing and singing along to it’s hypnotic burring.
