On very still nights growing up in the island of Stronsay, Orkney I remember hearing the sound of generators running in the distance from the various farms. Before electricity came to the island many farms had generators so they could attend to the animals in the byre during the long dark winter months. I’ve heard stories of children being told if they’re very good they’ll get taken out to the byre after supper to help feed the animals. Then they would dance to the generator. This is the sound of a Lister Startomatic generator which is common model found in Orkney.
