Wool is carded between two wooden hand held paddles with course teeth. Carding or combing wool is a necessary step in the process of making wool cloth. Carding makes sure all the wool fibers are untangled and aligned in one direction, making it easier to spin smoothly. In the days when wool was the most common clothing material this was an essential skill. This recording of Mrs Lament was made on 29th October 1969 in Shetland.
