Hens (PU3)

Owing to the shortage of eggs during and after the war many Orkney homes kept hens. Egg production was a massive industry in Orkney around wartime and in the old days as a source of income that the landlord/factor couldn’t touch. Egg production become a thriving activity for most crofters, many having several thousand hens.
