The rhythmic thud, thud, of the diesel engines of the ferries passing on their way to the North Isles of Orkney, in the fog.
Q. Where do you remember hearing this sound?
Egilsay, Orkney
Q. What is your memory or story surrounding this sound?
From the house, Onziebust in the south of the island of Egilsay, Orkney. Egilsay is a small island, just three miles by one mile, and a small population of less than 20. It is very quiet. When the fog steals over the island from the east, it is incredibly quiet, and it can feel as though there is no world out there. Then, faintly at first, the steady, rhythmic sound of the engines of the MV Earl Sigurd – or is it MV Earl Thorfinn? – grows louder and then fades away as it passes to the east of the island on its way to Westray, or Eday and Stronsay.
Q. How does this sound make you feel?
Comforted, Happy, Nostalgic
