Sound by MitchellQ. Can you recall a particular sound which strongly evokes a place or memory?
The huge sound of the land-based foghorn next to the lighthouse on North Ronaldsay.
Q. Where do you remember hearing this sound?
North Ronaldsay, Orkney
Q. What is your memory or story surrounding this sound?
Next to the lighthouse on North Ronaldsay, Orkney. Working at the bird observatory on the island of North Ronaldsay, we would go out at night to catch birds for ringing, using a lamp and a hand net. Some nights were better than others, but fog and a light easterly wind would bring migrant birds in, many attracted to the lighthouse. These birds then slept or fed on the grassy areas around the lighthouse. But of course, there as the foghorn! I remember the first time I was trying to creep up on Golden Plovers on the grass and there was this enormous blast of sound that reverberated right through my body. The birds took no notice!
Q. How does this sound make you feel?
Happy, Nostalgic
