The clatter of the ro-ro ramp on board MV Eynhallow

Q. Where do you remember hearing this sound?

Eynhallow Sound, Orkney

Q. What is your memory or story surrounding this sound?

The MV Eynhallow is the ferry that services the islands of Rousay, Egilsay and Wyre from Mainland, Orkney. The crew were incredibly experienced, and the ferry was rarely cancelled, even in the worst weather. When battling into fierce seas, the loading ramp at the front of the ferry would be hit by large amounts of water with a bang, followed but a rattling shudder. That was the sound of going home in foul weather.

Q. How does this sound make you feel?

Nostalgic, Rooted
